Tucson, Ariz. —
The first day of the Arizona Intercollegiate is in the books, and after Monday’s day one in the desert the University of New Mexico Men’s Golf team is within striking distance, sitting just two shots outside the top five at 27-over.

Due to darkness, no groups finished all 36 scheduled holes – the closing holes of the second 18 of the day have been suspended and are slated to begin Tuesday with an 8 a.m. start. Round two will be completed and will continue on with continuous play with pairings staying the same through Round 3.

The Lobos were lead by Andre Garcia, who avoided mistakes and carded five total birdies before finishing the day tied for second at 2-over with California’s William Aldred.

Sean Carlon joins Garcia inside the tournament’s top 15, Carlon sits in a quintet tied for 11th at 5-over overall. He had a difficult start to his afternoon but was able to make the turn with consecutive birdies.

Fellow sophomore Samuel Kim carded the team’s lone eagle on the day, and eventually finished the day tied for 33rd overall at 7-over.

Gustavo Morantes had consecutive birdies twice throughout the course of his round, however he made some mistakes closing out his rounds and eventually finished at 13-over and tied for 57th.

Rounding out the list of Lobo competitors is Andrej Bevins, who after a slow start, battled and found consistency in the afternoon competition to finish at 17-over and tied for 75th on the day.

The day’s conditions were blustery with consistent wind speeds ranging between 20-35 mph with no relief in site. Assistant Coach Chris Massoletti descried the teams efforts on the day as “tremendous,” praising the team for, “staying in a positive mindset in a very strong field” despite the day’s difficulties.

“They showed a lot of maturity and resolve finishing the first round 3-under in the last four holes as a team,” Massoletti said. “… This afternoon the boys continued to grind, but made a few too many big numbers. We have about 22 more holes to play (Tuesday) and are still in a solid position to have a great event.”
