Balloon Fiesta Invitational Results Through Day 2
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Three Lobos, Ricky Hernandez-Tong, Jorge Escutia and Rodolfo Jauregui remained perfect at the UNM Balloon Fiesta Invitational, and all three have shots to bring home flight titles on Sunday afternoon.
In addition, Michael Tran has a shot to take home a title with a little bit of help as well, which would give UNM a possibility of four of the five singles titles on Sunday.
Hernandez-Tong has rolled in Flight One, winning in three sets over Isaac Perez of Air Force (6-4, 4-6, 6-1) and Abilene Christian’s Hunter Holman (6-2, 6-7, 6-2). His 3-0 record matches up with New Mexico State’s Christofer Goncalves, and sets up a defacto Flight One championship match tomorrow at noon.
Jauregui also is perfect, winning six of seven sets at No. 3 singles, and he also has a matchup with New Mexico State for a potential title, as he will face off with Sergi Espias. Espias is 2-0 in the flight.
Rounding out the undefeateds for UNM is Jorge Escutia, who rolled the three straight straight-set victories, and with a win at noon over NMSU’s Mauricio Benitez, he would win the Flight 4 title.
Michael Tran is in Flight 5 sitting at 2-1, but could force a two-way or three-way tie for the flight title with a win. Head to head would be the first tiebreaker, with total sets won and total games won used to break any further ties.
Only Sean Baklini in Flight 2 can’t win a title tomorrow, but he has a shot at a 2-2 record with a win at noon on Sunday. NAU’s Sebastian Equez and Air Force’s Luke Sanderson are both 3-0 and face off with each other for the title at noon Sunday.
However, Baklini has a title shot in doubles as he and Jauregui are 3-0 with a date with Air Force’s Sanderson and Matt Ghering in the way. Sanderson and Ghering are 0-2.
Action on Sunday begins with doubles at 9 and 10 a.m. at the McKinnon Family Tennis Center. New Mexico State and Abilene Christian will face off at 9 a.m. along with New Mexico and Air Force. The 10 a.m. doubles pairings will be Air Force vs. New Mexico State and Abilene Christian vs. Northern Arizona.
At noon, New Mexico and New Mexico State’s singles players will take on each other at the McKinnon Family Tennis Center. Northern Arizona and Air Force take on each other in singles at noon at the Estes Tennis Center.
