LAS VEGAS, NV – The No. 5 seeded University of New Mexico men’s tennis squad fell to No. 4 seed and host UNLV tonight in the quarterfinals of the Mountain West Championships, ending their championship hopes.
The No. 64 ranked team started off strong by clinching the doubles point with wins at the number one and two positions. Bart Van Leijsen and Hayden Sabatka pulled off a 6-3 win at number one.
Michael Tran and Rodolfo Jauregui fell 6-2 at the number three spot, but Ricky Hernandez-Tong and Jorge Escutia clinched the doubles point with a 7-5 win over Adam Gage-Brown and Evaldo Neto at the number two position.
In singles play, Hernandez-Tong put the Lobos at a 2-0 lead when he dominated Neto 6-0, 6-2 at the number four position.
Unfortunately, the Lobos would not get any more singles wins, allowing the Rebels to put four points on the board with wins at the number three, six, two and one positions respectively.
Van Leijsen and Sabatka, New Mexico’s number one and two contenders, opened with first set wins, but both lost in three sets.
The Lobos end their season going 15-16.
