Lubbock, Texas— The University of New Mexico men’s tennis team took on No. 17 Texas Tech this morning followed by another match- up against Arizona later this afternoon. After inclement weather caused the matches to be postponed, the Lobos couldn’t seem to gain momentum.

During this morning’s doubles play against No. 17 Texas Tech Ricky Hernandez-Tong and Jorge Escutia put the Lobos on the board with the first point after defeating Tech’s Hugo Dojas and Augusto Stodart 6-4. Texas came back to win the second point after Jolan Cailleau and Connor Curry defeated Augustus Ge and Roldofo Jauregui 6-4.

In the final double’s match, No. 8 Hayden Sabatka and Bart Van Leijsen battled Alex Sendegeya and Bjorn Thomson. The two teams went back and forth and eventually went into a tiebreaker. The Lobos fought hard, but fell 7-6 (8-6).

The Lobos couldn’t clinch any singles win once Tech gained momentum by winning the first matches. The Lobos lost to Texas Tech 4-0.

The squad then headed into their second match of the day against Arizona. The teams did not play doubles matches.

In singles play, Hayden Sabatka pulled out a win against Arizona’s Harry Busby 6-3, 7-5. Jorge Escutia also got a point for the Lobos when he defeated Trent Botha 7-6 (5), 6-3.

Those were the only points the Lobos would get against Arizona in singles play.

“It was a tough day today,” said head coach Bart Scott. “Texas Tech was too tough, but we simply didn’t fight the way we know how. I challenged the guys after that match and they responded so well. I’m so proud of their effort. Simply put, we just aren’t executing in the important moments of the match.”

“Arizona deserves a ton of credit,” he continued. “They have a much improved team and we wish them all the best this season.”

Scott added that the team has the day off tomorrow and that they will use that rest and recover before they battle Pacific and Texas Tech again on Monday. Those matches are scheduled for 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.
