Ottosson Leads the Way at MSU Slalom

Big Sky, Mont.Sara Ottosson blitzed her second run, turning in the second-best time in round two, pushing her all the win into the top 10, becoming the fourth Lobo women’s alpine skier to record a top 10 mark this season, coming in eighth in the women’s slalom at the MSU Invitational.

The Lobos had four top 20 runs overall and sit in seventh place after the alpine portion of the MSU Invitational.  The meet takes a few days off before heading to the Nordic course for the final four events, which will take place on Sunday and Monday.

Ottosson time of 52.81 in the second run was bested only by Colorado’s Jessica Honkonen, who also made a sizable jump.  Ottosson was in 16th after her first run.  The only Lobo in the top 10 after the first run with Sydney Staples, who finished 13th overall.  Karoline Søvik Myklebust was 16th and Courtney Altringer was 17th.  Taylor Grauer narrowly missed the top 20, coming in 23rd, and Kat Irwin recorded a DNF in the first run.

For Ottosson, it’s her best finish of the season and her sixth career top 10 finish.  She twice finished seventh last season.  Overall, Ottosson scored 23 points, Staples 18 and Myklebust 15.

On the men’s side, Tyler Theis was the top finisher, coming in 26th for 12 points.  Rob Greig was 28th for 11 points and Alex Barounos was 32nd to round out the scoring with 10 points.  Patrick Brachner was UNM’s only other skier in the meet, and he DNF’ed in the opening run.

NOTES:  Alex Barounos took back the season points lead from Patrick Brachner with 36 … Barounos and Tyler Theis each led the team with three counters in four races … Sydney Staples leads the alpine squad with 77 points, as she is the only Lobo to score in all four races … Ottosson’s points were her first of the season … Courtney Altringer is the only other Lobo to have completed all four scoring races, although she didn’t score points today … counting the RMISA giant slalom qualifier, both Altringer and Staples have completed all five races.
