ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.—The University of New Mexico men’s tennis squad finished day four of the 2015 Regional Championships today and they are still alive in the last day thanks to the duo of Hayden Sabatka and Bart Van Leijsen.
The no. 1 seeded pair headed into the semifinals this morning against Sierra and McGeehan of the University of Utah at McKinnon Family Tennis Stadium. The Lobos lead 6-3 in the first set and finished off the match beating Utah 6-2 in the second.
This will be the seventh year in a row that the Lobos have played on the finals day of this tournament. It is the ninth year in the last ten.
“Bart and Hayden were clinical today against a game Utah team,” said head coach Bart Scott. “They are excited for the opportunity tomorrow and I’m looking forward to a great match.”
The Lobos will play the no. 2 seeded pair of Craig and Gasson of Denver University in the final tomorrow at 10:00 a.m.
In consolation play, Jorge Escutia defeated players from New Mexico State University and the University of Montana to advance to the semifinals. He will play Asmar from New Mexico State tomorrow in the semifinals.
Sean Baklini battled against his opponent from Brigham Young University to three sets, but fell short 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 in his consolation singles match.
Sunday is the last day of the Regional Championships.
