Kyra Mohns Collegiate Bio (2015-2018)

Kyra Mohns, a former UNM student-athlete and Albuquerque native, joined the staff as a full-time assistant coach in August 2021. She works primarily with the sprints, hurdles and multis.

Since joining the coaching staff as a graduate assistant in 2019, Mohns-coached athletes have produced nine school records indoors and five outdoors.

In 2022, she guided a women’s 4x400m squad to break the women’s indoor and outdoor school records, and Tianna Holmes (indoor and outdoor 200m and 400m), McKenna Watson (60m sprint), Rivaldo Leacock (400m hurdles) and Rebecca Grieve (600m) all set new program records under Mohns. Leacock and Holmes both qualified for NCAA West Region Preliminaries.

In 2023, the UNM women broke the indoor and outdoor 4x400m relay records yet again. Victor Akhalu matched the UNM 100m program record in the outdoor season, clocking a 10.28 at MW Outdoor Championships to finish as runner-up. Five women and two men coached by Mohns qualified for NCAA West Region Prelims

Athletes coached by Mohns record 14 new personal bests that rank among the Top 10 in their respective events across the indoor and outdoor season in 2024, with Lou-Anne Pouzancre Hoyer running the second-fastest indoor 400m and 200m bests in program history en route to All-MW honors and Brodie Young closing his season with the third-fastest 400m in history at NCAA West Region Prelims. Along with Young, Victor Akhalu also qualified for NCAA Prelims in the 100m.

During the 2025 indoor season, Mohns’ athletes broke a combined five school records and recorded 16 all-time Top 10 marks. In the outdoor season, her athletes produced four more program records and 17 All-Time Top 10 performances. UNM swept the Mountain West Women's Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field team titles thanks largely to the contributions of Mohns' sprints and hurdles athletes.

Under Mohns’ coaching, Brodie Young set a new UNM and Scottish National record in the 400m with a 45.66 raw time (45.77 converted) – that time qualified him for NCAA Indoor Championships, making him the first 400m runner from UNM to do so since Jarrin Solomon. Young also broke the 200m record with a 20.87 converted time in prelims at MW Indoor Championships.

Lou-Anne Pouzancre ran the fastest indoor 400m in program history at the Don Kirby Elite, clocking a 52.50 converted time – Rebecca Grieve also ran the second-fastest time in school history with a 52.69. The duo ran the second- and third-fastest indoor 200m races in school history the same season with a 23.59 and 23.79 respectively at the UNM Team Open.

In that same indoor season, three different UNM 4x400m relay squads recorded times that rank among the Top Four in program history indoors, with Sofia Pineda, Lou-Anne Pouzancre Hoyer, Hanna Kiess and Rebecca Grieve combining for a 3:36.85 (Converted) performance that stands as a new program record.

In his first year of collegiate track & field after switching over from football, Mohns coached Cam Watts to two Mountain West titles in the indoor 60m and outdoor 100m, with Watts breaking the UNM outdoor 100m record with a 10.05 raw performance at the Don Kirby Tailwind.

In the 400 hurdles, Hanna Kiess also set a new UNM record with a 57.70 performance at NCAA West Regionals – the previous record of 58.10 had stood since 1984. In Kiess’ first 400 hurdles race after joining the team in 2024, she ran a 1:03.25.

Rebecca Grieve also broke the UNM 400m record at the Arizona Desert Heat Classic, putting down a 52.08 clocking to surpass Tianna Holmes’ 52.11 performance from 2021.

Seven of Coach Mohns’ athletes qualified for NCAA West Regionals in eight events, with UNM’s Women’s 4x400m relay qualifying for NCAA Outdoor Championships for the first time after finishing third in their heat and eighth overall – their 3:31.71 time broke the UNM program record once again. Four women’s 4x400m relay performances from the 2025 outdoor season rank as the Top Four fastest in program history.

At NCAA Outdoor Championships, the Lobos’ 4x400m relay finished 16th in prelims with a 3:32.38 time.
