LAS VEGAS, Nev. --- Yu Yun "Kathy" Tsai faced UC Davis's No. 1 seed, Elim Yan, in the Mountain West Qualifiers.
Yan never had a chance. Tsai won back-to-back deuce points in the opening set and rolled to a 6-1, 6-3 win over Yan to cruise into the semifinals, where she will face UNLV's Hudson Hawkins for a spot in the championship match.
After each player won their opening service game, Yan led 40-30, but Tsai took the last two points for a break and a 2-1 lead. Tsai then won another deuce point on her serve to take a 3-1 lead, then won two double-break points to close out the opening set 6-1.
The second set started similarly: at 1-1, Yan double-faulted at deuce to squander two game points, and Tsai took a 2-1 lead. That began a four-break run before Tsai won another deuce point to go up 4-3. From there, Tsai won eight of the next 10 points to take the second set 6-3 and win the match.
