ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.— The in-state rivalry returns on Saturday night as the Lobos close out their three-match road stint in Las Cruces against New Mexico State at 7 p.m.
UNM enters the match 3-2-0 on the season, while NMSU is 1-6-0, including 0-2-0 at home.
PRIDE OF NEW MEXICO
The roster features six players from The Land of Enchantment, with half local Lobos from Albuquerque (Kennedy Brown, Ayla Dils, Savanah Sanchez). Mia Barela (Las Cruces), Analyse Healy (Farmington) and Jasmin Gonzalez-Rutt (Santa Fe) round out the New Mexico natives.
In last year’s match against New Mexico State, Sanchez scored two goals and Gonzalez-Rutt earned the win with seven saves. UNM won 4-0, tied for the largest margin of victory over the Aggies in the series.
UNM is 12-2-0 in the series with NMSU, 5-2-0 in Las Cruces. The Lobos have outscored the Aggies 27-7 in the series and 11-5 in the last four years.
CLOSING OUT THE WEEK WITH A ROAD WIN
UNM trailed 2-1 after Northern Colorado scored 1:06 into the second half, but responded to score three goals in a span of 3:42 in the final 20 minutes for the 4-2 win.
Savanah Sanchez tied the match at the 71:19 mark with Angelina Moschetti scoring the game-winning goal off of a free kick at 72:53. Presley Devey closed the scoring with a goal at 75:01.
Devey scored the first goal of the match 20:49 in, her second multiple-goal match in her career.
Moschetti scored her first goal as a Lobo and second collegiate goal, and Sanchez scored her first goal of the season.
The Lobos outshot the Bears 22-9, 13-6 in shots on goal.
GOOD THINGS COME IN THREE
Alysa Whelchel leads the team with three assists and Nicole Anderson and Presley Devey leads the team with three goals.
For Whelchel, her three assists tie her season bests in both 2024 and 2025.
For Anderson, she scored the third brace of her career and fourth multiple-goal match of her career against CSUN.
Two of UNM’s wins have come when scoring three or more goals: a 3-2 win over CSUN and a 4-2 win over Northern Colorado.
GO THE DISTANCE
In the five matches, Morgan Juran has played the full 450 minutes, along with goalkeeper Alyson Campbell.
Last season, Juran played 90 minutes in 14 of the 19 matches, and in her three years at UNM, has played the full 90 in 24 matches. Counting her freshman season at Elon, she’s played 90 minutes 32 times throughout her collegiate career.
Kennedy Brown played 90 minutes 16 times last season and in a total of 33 matches in her time as a Lobo. Brown has also started every match the last three years and the last 56 matches. She played the full 90 minutes in three matches this season plus 80 against CSUN and 85 at Colorado.
Fiona Jenkins played 90 minutes in eight matches last season and 30 times in her four years as a Lobo. She played the full 90 matches in the first two matches.
Gabby Beaudry recently joined the list, playing the full 90 minutes the last three matches. She’s played the full time four times in her time as a Lobo, going 90 minutes last year at Oregon.
ABOUT THE OPPONENT
New Mexico State is 1-6-0 on the season and has lost its last four matches, including 3-0 to Mountain West opponent Hawai’i.
The Aggies have scored two goals this season, scored by Angeline Montoya and Esme Arenas, with Azalie Floriano responsible for the lone assist.
Opponents have scored 18 goals with Karolanne Lafortune and Emilia Compian sharing time in net. Lafortune has allowed 12 goals and made 36 saves in six matches and Compian has allowed six goals with three saves in two matches.
In the seven matches, opponents are outshooting the Aggies 125-34, 57-15 in shots on goal. Zoey Gist leads NMSU with five shots on goal and is tied with Arenas in overall shots taken with seven. NMSU has been outshot 58-9 in the first half and 67-25 in the second half, and of the 18 goals allowed, opponents have scored 14 in the second half.
