ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.—Trailing 2-0 at the half of Sunday’s match against Nevada, the Lobos responded with an emphatic five goals in the final 45 minutes to defeat the Wolf Pack 5-2.
Of note, it matched the identical score of the last time the two teams played in Albuquerque, with UNM scoring the first five goals before Nevada scored two. In addition, the last time the Lobos had multiple-goal goal scorers in a conference match was against Nevada in 2024.
With the win, the Lobos start 2-0-0 in Mountain West play for the first time since 2021.
Presley Devey and Fiona Jenkins led the Lobos with two goals apiece, with Jenkins also adding an assist. Claire Roybal scored her first goal of the season to close the scoring.
Much like Thursday’s contest in which the Lobos scored three goals in a span of 15:16, the Lobos scored three goals in a span of 15:21 on Sunday to tie and take the lead, starting with Jenkins scoring off of a cross from Allie Anderson 1:34 into the second half.
A little less than 10 minutes later, Anderson blocked a pass from a Wolf Pack player with Gabby Beaudry settling the ball and chipping it up the field. A Nevada player attempted to head the ball, heading it behind her and landing in stride of Devey, who had an open path to the goal. Dribbling towards the left side of the box, Devey shot it low right and slid it under the Nevada goalkeeper for the equalizer at 56:26.
After Nicole Anderson was awarded a penalty kick after being tackled in the box at the 58:23 mark, the Wolf Pack goalkeeper saved the kick to keep the match tied at two. However, a Nevada goal kick at 61:40 was headed by Devey, with the ball going to open space and rolling towards the box with N. Anderson in pursuit with a Nevada defender. N. Anderson did a swim move to gain the inside track to the ball with the Nevada keeper coming out and taking out N. Anderson’s legs for the foul and penalty kick awarded.
Devey took the penalty kick with 61:55 on the clock, going low right for the goal, her fifth of the season.
The Lobos had a chance to add to their lead in the 65th minute after Angelina Moschetti sent the ball into the box on a cross with Devey attempting to get a head on it and the ball going off target high right.
A feed into the far left side of the box in the 68th minute was tracked down by Jenkins, who side stepped two Nevada defenders and was tackled from behind in the box trying to cut towards the goal for the foul and penalty kick at 67:29.
Jenkins took the penalty kick, going right and past the diving Wolf Pack goalkeeper for the goal and the brace. It also marked a career high in goals for the Lobo.
UNM added a final goal off of a corner kick in 84th minute. Jenkins took the corner kick, sending it into box and finding Roybal in the six-yard box, who headed it into the back of the goal.
Nevada 7-6 in shots in the first half with each team taking two shots on goal, but the Lobos outshot the Wolf Pack 13-2 and 8-0 in shots on goal in the second half.
The Lobos improve to 5-2-2 and 2-0-0 in conference play ahead of traveling to Grand Canyon for their lone match of the week on Saturday.
