ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.— Nicole Anderson scored her fourth goal of the season in the 23rd minute of Sunday’s match against Idaho State with Celina Frenz providing the assist, however, a late penalty kick in consecutive matches resulted in a 1-1 draw.
The Lobos had the edge in shots and shots on goal at 15-10 and 6-3, respectively, with Anderson taking a match-high four shots with two on goal.
After ISU’s first shot of the match was blocked 4:39 in, the Lobos had two chances in the sixth minute with Alysa Whelchel’s shot saved and Anderson’s shot 39 seconds later also saved.
UNM continued to create chances with Anderson’s shot in the 14th minute going wide right and Angelina Moschetti’s shot at the start of the 17th minute requiring a save by the Bengal goalkeeper. Consecutive shots by Presley Devey went wide right and then wide left, before the Lobos got on the board at the 22:54 mark.
A goal kick taken by Morgan Juran landed past midfield with Devey making the initial contact and following a sliding tackle, Frenz tapped the loose ball directly up ahead to Anderson, who had a step ahead of the ISU defender going towards the left side of the 18-yard box. Midway inside the box, parallel with the penalty spot, Anderson used her left foot to send it low right past the ISU keeper who was trying to kick save it.
The goal marked the first assist of the season and fourth-career assist for Frenz, as well as the fourth goal and 17th-career goal for Anderson.
ISU had two chances set up by two corner kicks with both shots going wide left with the Lobo lead holding at the half.
UNM outshot ISU 7-4 and 4-0 in shots on goal in the first 45 minutes.
Anderson took the first shot of the second half that was blocked with a shot by Allie Anderson in the 51st minute going wide left and a shot by Devey in the 60th minute requiring a save.
A foul called on UNM in the box at the 88:02 mark resulted in a penalty kick awarded to the Bengals, which was upheld following a video review, with ISU converting to tie the match.
UNM had a final chance with Whelchel getting deep in the box, finding some space to get a shot off that went inches wide left past the post.
The Lobos head into conference play 3-2-2, set to start off MW play at home against San José State on Thursday, Sept. 24.
