PULLMAN, Wash. – New Mexico Baseball responded to an early outburst from Washington State but ultimately fell 13-3 in eight innings Sunday at Bailey-Brayton Field as the Cougars clinched the weekend series.
UNM racked up nine hits in total, with Lenny Junior Ashby (1 R, 1 RBI) and Akili Carris (1 RBI) both singling twice to lead the way. The Lobos cut the deficit to 5-3 in the fifth inning after Ashby drove in Anthony Diaz with an RBI single but didn't score again as the Cougs ended things early with a 10-run lead.
Diaz (1 R) extended his hit streak to 13 games to lead five other Lobos that finished with a knock each – Lachlan Maude, Khalil Walker, Luke Mansy (2B, 1 R, BB) and Brodey Williams (1 RBI).
RHP Diego Alvarez (5 IP, 9 H, 5 R / 5 ER, 0 BB, 2 K) was tagged with the loss to drop to 1-3 on the season, with LHP Matt Romero (0 IP, 1 H, 2 R / 2 ER, 1 BB, 0 K), RHP Josh Barnhouse (1 IP, 3 H, 3 R / 3 ER, 1 BB, 2 K) and RHP Talor Grubbs (1.1 IP, 5 H, 3 R / 2 ER, 0 BB, 3 K) combined to throw the rest of the game.
