ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – New Mexico Baseball led 11-3 heading into the seventh and looked poised to extend its home win streak to 13 games before Tarleton State scored 10 unanswered over the final three frames to storm back and take Game One of the weekend series 13-11.
It's New Mexico's first home loss this season, putting an end to the best home win streak to start the season since 1992.
The Lobos (12-2) and Texans (8-5) will play two as part of tomorrow’s doubleheader, with a seven-inning first game that gets underway at 12 p.m. MT and a nine-inning second game roughly 45 minutes after its completion.
Despite a quality start from RHP Cristian Mogen (5.2 IP, 8 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 5 K) and runs on the board in four consecutive innings that built an eight-run lead, but the Texans racked up 12 hits through the rest of the game as they surged back in front down the stretch. RHP Ty Cunningham (1.1 IP, 6 H, 5 ER, 0 BB, 2 K) and RHP Josh Barnhouse (1.1 IP, 5 H, 5 ER, 0 BB, 1 K) were tagged for 10 earned runs in that span, with Barnhouse being given the loss to drop to 1-2 on the season. RHP Luke Wiseman (0.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K) collected the final two outs to give the Lobos a chance to rally down two heading into the bottom of the ninth.
Khalil Walker went 3-for-5 with a run scored and two RBI on his fourth and fifth doubles of the season to lead a 13-hit outing for the Lobos’ bats, with Anthony Diaz (2-for-5, 1 R, 1 BB), Luke Mansy (2-for-5, 2 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB), Akili Carris (2-for-3, 1 R, 2 RBI, 2 BB) and Karsen Waslefsky (2-for-4, 2 R, 1 RBI) all finishing with multiple knocks.
Damian Garcia came up with a three-run bomb – his third homer of the year – that extended UNM’s lead to 8-2 and came just shy of hitting a two-run homer that would’ve equalized in the bottom of the ninth. That drive was called foul and upheld after review, with Garcia grounding out to first on the next pitch.
