HOUSTON, Texas --- The Lobos certainly made the Houston Cougars work for everything on Saturday, as the Cougars defeated UNM 4-0 in a match that was much closer than that final score.
The loss was UNM's first of the season, dropping the Lobos to 3-1. Houston moved to 6-0 with six 4-0 wins. However, UNM was never out of this one until the final volley.
In doubles, the Cougars took a pair of matches to go up 1-0, but singles was much closer. The Cougars got a pair of straight-set wins at Nos. 5 and 6 singles to move to 3-0, but everything else was tight.
Eventually, the Cougars clinched the match at No. 2 singles as Chems Doha Zeghlouli won in three sets over freshman Vianca Corley, winning 6-1, 4-6, 6-2. UNM's Yu Yun "Kathy" Tsai was about to force a third set, and Ana Veroux was in a third set as UNM was close to becoming the first team to score on Houston this year.
The Lobos head to the Pacific Northwest next weekend to take on Idaho, South Dakota (at Idaho), and Gonzaga.
