ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – New Mexico’s sprinters put on a show on Day Two of competition at the UNM Collegiate Classic Saturday, with Taniya Looney (60m), Rebecca Grieve (400m) and the Lobos’ 4x400m Relay squad all producing the fastest times in program history against a nationally-competitive field at the Albuquerque Convention Center.

The Lobos return for one more competition at home next weekend at the Don Kirby Elite, with UNM’s distance contingent heading to Seattle for the UW Husky Invitational. All of next weekend’s action in Albuquerque will be available to stream via paid subscription to FloTrack, with live results available via GoLobos.com/TrackResults. Men’s 60 Hurdles Prelims
20. Semaj Thompson - 8.26 / 8.28 @

Semaj Thompson finished fifth in his heat and 20th overall with an 8.26 raw performance while Jacob Cavanaugh ran a hundredth of a second faster than his previous best in his season opener at the MLK Invitational to move up from No. 7 to No. 6 on the UNM All-Time List. 

Women’s 60 Hurdles Prelims
29. Adryana Shelby - 8.92 / 8.94 @ 

Adryana Shelby finished sixth in the final heat of prelims with an 8.92 clocking, her third race in a row running below nine seconds after posting a 9.21 for her season opener at MLK.

Jacob Cavanaugh collected his second improvement of the day at the 60m distance, taking eight hundredths of a second off his 7.06 time from the MLK Invitational in 2024. Behind him, Melaki Gutierrez opened his season just a tenth of a second shy of his 60m best to finish 46th overall.

In her return from a minor injury that kept her out of competition in the last two meets, Taniya Looney matched her collegiate best from her time at DII Pittsburgh State with a 7.40 raw time – more than a tenth of a second faster than the previous UNM indoor record held by McKenna Watson (7.52 / 7.54@) that had stood since 2023. She advanced to semifinals with a second-place finish in her heat.

In later heats, Laylah Lawson (7.70) and Lauren Fowler (8.05) both finished shy of personal bests as they placed 48th and 62nd overall in a stacked sprints field.

Women’s Triple Jump
13. Mikyla Harkley - 12.05m (39' 6½")

Harkley jumped above 12 meters on all three attempts, getting 12.05m on her third to finish 13th overall.

Men’s Triple Jump
2. Cameron Miller - 15.49m (50' 10")*

Miller posted a new personal best for the second time in as many triple jump competitions this season, finishing second overall in a competitive field with a 15.49m mark. He’s now just three centimeters away from cracking the UNM All-Time Top 10 in the event. He got his mark on his second attempt, scratching on all others.

2025 NCAA Indoor Second Team All-American Brodie Young posted a strong sub-46 second season opener in his specialty event with a 45.79 (45.90 converted) – .17 seconds faster than his season opener in 2025 and just .23 seconds shy of his UNM indoor record – to finish fifth overall. It’s the fourth-fastest 400m race of his collegiate career, indoors or outdoors. Young is the first Mountain West athlete to run below 46 seconds this season.

In the later heats, Kahari Wilbon ran below 47 seconds for the first time in his collegiate career with a 46.94 raw time that converts to a 57.04 – good for No. 6 on the UNM indoor list. He’s now ran lifetime bests in his first two two-lap races of the 2026 indoor season.

Freshman Valin Wittenberg crossed in 48.40 in his first 400m race as a Lobo.

New Mexico’s women’s 400m crew posted four of the Top 10 fastest performances in program history with three new personal bests in total, led by a stunning improvement from Rebecca Grieve that makes her the first woman from New Mexico to run below 52 seconds indoors or outdoors.

Grieve was one of three athletes to finish below the previous ABQCC Facility Record of 52.24 as she ran a new career best of 51.80 – she’s now the UNM program record holder in the event both indoors and outdoors and now leads the Mountain West.

Eva Ngom posted an improvement in just her second collegiate 400m race, taking .34 seconds off the 53.70 time she posted in her first race last weekend to move up to No. 4 all-time. Rasha Badrani entered the UNM All-Time List in her first 400m race as a Lobo, running a 53.48 raw time that moved her into No. 5 on the list just behind Ngom. Sofia Pineda also moved up on the all-time list, going up from No. 10 to No. 7 all-time.

Women’s 60 Meters Semifinal
19. Taniya Looney - 7.44 / 7.46 @ 

Looney ran below the previous UNM record again with a 7.44 raw time in semifinals but did not advance, finishing 19th overall. She now holds the two fastest 60m individual performances in school history in her first two races in a UNM uniform.

The UNM women blew away a school record set just last year as they finished third behind two of the fastest relay squads in the nation in UCLA and USC, running 5.08 seconds faster than the previous record of 3:36.85 ran at Mountain West Championships last season. The converted 3:31.77 performance is only six hundredths of a second slower than UNM’s 3:31.71 performance outdoors at NCAA West Regionals last May.

With today’s finish, each of the Top Eight women’s 4x400m relay performances in school history were under the coaching of UNM Sprints and Hurdles Coach Kyra Mohns.
