ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Rebecca Grieve ran the second-fastest 600m race in collegiate history to lead nine new personal bests and five new record book entries on New Mexico Track & Field’s first day of competition at the UNM Team Open Friday afternoon at the ABQ Convention Center.
In total, four of the Top 10 fastest women's 200m times in program history were ran on Friday, with Eva Ngom (24.23 @, #7), Sofia Pineda (24.29 @, #8), Rasha Badrani (24.34 @, #9) and Hanna Kiess (24.56 @, #10) all notching new personal bests to enter or move up in the UNM All-Time Top 10. Eight of the current Top 10 times in program history are now recorded by athletes coached by UNM Sprints & Hurdles Coach Kyra Mohns.
Competition resumes tomorrow morning, with Women’s Pole Vault and Men’s 60m Hurdle Prelims both getting underway at 10 a.m. MT. Hughes improved on her season-opening mark with UNM’s longest jump of the day (5.86m) on her fourth attempt to finish fifth overall, while Mikyla Harkley joined her in the Top 10 with a 5.59m mark on her second attempt. Freshman Hanna Vincent jumped 5.41m on her second jump to finish 16th overall, while Lauren Fowler also improved on her mark from last weekend by 19 centimeters to finish 22nd.

20. Valin Wittenberg - 21.79 / 21.86 @
Wilbon ran just a hundredth of a second shy of his personal best in the 200m, winning his heat and finishing sixth overall with a 21.50 (21.57 converted) time. He’ll return for tomorrow’ 400m invitational section. Valin Wittenberg – a New Mexico state record holder in the 400m in high school – made his collegiate track debut with a 21.79 raw performance, good for 20th overall.

All five Lobos in the women’s 200m posted new PR’s in the event, with the top three – Eva Ngom, Sofia Pineda and Hanna Kiess – all recording times that rank seventh, eighth and ninth in program history respectively.

Both Cavanaugh and Thompson – both primarily long hurdles specialists – ran new personal bests in their first two-lap races of the indoor season, with Cavanaugh taking .31 seconds off his previous PR and Thompson taking 1.36 seconds off his. The duo finished first and fourth in their heat, respectively.

In her first 400m race of the season, Quarles finished third in her heat with a 59-flat raw time that converts to a 59.11.

After setting a new program record in each of her last two 600m races, Grieve improved yet again in Friday’s three-lap race with a new UNM record that ranks second in collegiate history behind only Sanu Jallow-Lockhart’s 1:24.19 collegiate record set in January. She now owns two of the Top 15 600m performances in collegiate history and the two fastest performances from a Scottish woman.
Women’s Invitational 200 Meters
10. Rasha Badrani - 24.27 / 24.34 @

In her first 200m race in a New Mexico uniform, Badrani finished second in her heat with a time that moves her up to No. 9 on the UNM 200m All-Time List indoors. It’s the fastest indoor 200m race she’s ran in her collegiate career but still shy of her 23.85 outdoor best run while at Cal State San Marcos.
