Pamela Kosgei Advances to NCAA 10K Final on Day 2 at West Regional Prelims

by Connor Gilbert

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – New Mexico Track & Field closed Day Two at West Region Preliminaries with Pamela Kosgei punching her ticket to NCAA Outdoor Finals with an explosive kick in the Women’s 10,000m and three Lobo women advancing to Saturday’s quarterfinals – Judy Rono (1,500m), Hanna Kiess (400H) and Rebecca Grieve (400m).

Kosgei won the 10,000m final to complete a Lobo sweep of both the men’s and women’s races after Ishmael Kipkurui and Habtom Samuel went 1-2 on the men’s side 24 hours earlier, bring the total of UNM individual qualifiers to three with two days left of regional competition.

1,500 Meters First Round (Heat 2)
4. Judy Rono – 4:17.29
QUALIFIED for Saturday’s Quarterfinal

One of just two Lobo women in program history to run below 4:12 in the 1,500m, Judy Rono kept her season going with a fourth-place finish in the second heat of the day, crossing in 4:17.29 to advance with little anxiety. She’ll race for a spot at NCAA Outdoor Championships on Saturday.

400 Meters First Round (Heat 2)
4. Rebecca Grieve – 52.67 (21st overall)
QUALIFIEDfor Saturday’s Quarterfinal

UNM 400m record holder Rebecca Grieve posted a 52.67 – the 21st-fastest time of the day – as she finished fourth in her heat. It was only her second sub-53 second performance of the outdoor season and fourth of her career, with all four being in the 2024-25 academic year.

400 Meters First Round (Heat 4)
4. Lou-Anne Pouzancre Hoyer – 53.23 (26th overall)

Pouzancre Hoyer crossed in 53.23 — good for fourth in her heat and the 26th-fastest time of the First Round – as she was just the second woman out of advancing to Quarterfinals.

400 Hurdles First Round (Heat 3)
5. Hanna Kiess – 58.40 (21st overall)
• QUALIFIED for Saturday’s Quarterfinal

With a fifth-place finish in a fast third heat, Kiess advanced with her 58.40 time, ensuring she’ll get at least one more 400 hurdles race this season. She’ll also compete as a leg of UNM’s 4x400m relay squad on Saturday.

200 Meters First Round (Heat 2)
6. Lou-Anne Pouzancre Hoyer – 23.77 (37th overall)

Within two hours of her 400m race, Pouzancre Hoyer finished sixth in her heat of the 200m, putting down a 23.77 time that stood as the 37th-best of the evening and marked her final individual competition of the 2025 outdoor season. She’ll return for the women’s 4x400m relay on Saturday alongside Sofia Pineda, Hanna Kiess and Rebecca Grieve.

10,000 Meters Semifinal
1. Pamela Kosgei – 33:37.04
QUALIFIED for NCAA Outdoor Championships
27. Nicola Jansen – 35:11.77
34. Jasmine Wood – 35:48.69

After going toe-to-toe with Oregon’s Diana Cherotich (33:43.18) at the front of the pack for nearly the whole race, Kosgei turned on the jets left her behind with a scorching 65-second bell lap to finish first in dominating fashion and reassert herself as the athlete to beat in two weeks at Hayward Field — the single-fastest 400-meter split of any athlete in the race. Even with the second-fastest lap of the night in that same final lap (1:10.98), Cherotich was still five seconds behind when the two were dead even with 400 meters to go. Behind Kosgei, Nicola Jansen (35:11.77) finished 27th and Jasmine Wood (35:48.69) crossed 34th in a slower strategic race with hot humid conditions prevalent.
