Jasmine Wood, Vincent Chirchir Win 10K Titles on Day 1 at MW OTF Championships

With Day One of Mountain West Outdoor Track & Field Championships in the books, New Mexico sits in second in the men’s team score with 26 points and fourth in the women’s score with 14 thanks to a dominant effort in the Men’s and Women’s 10,000m finals.

Jasmine Wood and Vincent Chirchir both won their first conference titles in the event as the Lobos juiced a combined 40 points from both finals, with Evans Kiplagat finishing as men’s runner-up behind Chirchir as both finished under the previous men’s meet record and Wood holding on to win by just a hundredth of a second.

Nine Lobos also advanced out of Thursday’s sprint event preliminaries, with Judy Rono (800), Meadow Drebert (800), Matthew Endrody (800), Lukas Kiprop (800), Lou-Anne Pouzancre Hoyer (200), Rebecca Grieve (200), Brodie Young (200), Elijah Jefferson (200), Hanna Kiess (400H), Levente Soos (400H) and Jacob Cavanaugh (400H) all punching their tickets to Sunday’s finals.

Day Two of Mountain West OTF Championships open up for UNM with Pietra Campbell in the Women’s 100m Hurdles Prelims at 6:30 p.m. MT.

Women’s 800m Prelim
3. Judy Rono – 2:08.73 (Q)
8. Meadow Drebert – 2:08.84 (q)

The first runner of the day for UNM, Drebert posted a new personal best (2:08.84) – 0.3 seconds faster than her previous season best at the Bryan Clay Invitational on April 16 – to finish fourth in the opening heat and secure her advancement to Saturday’s 800m final based on her time. In the third heat, Judy Rono – the MW’s No. 1 800m performer this outdoor season and 2025 indoor champion – finished first with a 2:08.73 clocking to ensure both Lobos would move on.

Women’s Javelin Final
11. Carlotta Dünninger – 36.92m (121′ 1″)

Dünninger threw 36.92m (121′ 1″) – just shy of her 38.69m season best – to finish 11th overall in the women’s javelin final.

Men’s 800m Prelim
1. Matthew Endrody – 1:49.52 (Q)
8. Lukas Kiprop – 1:51.25 (q)

Endrody narrowly missed out on matching his personal best with the fastest time of the men’s 800m prelims (1:49.50) as he won the opening heat, with Kiprop posting a 1:51.25 in the first outdoor 800m of his collegiate career – a new lifetime best – as he also qualified based on his time.

Women’s 200m Prelim
4. Lou-Anne Pouzancre Hoyer – 23.55 (Q)
7. Rebecca Grieve – 23.67 (q)
27. Laylah Lawson – 25.37

Both Pouzancre Hoyer and Grieve ensured they’d make it through to Sunday’s 200m Final, with Pouzancre Hoyer winning the second heat to secure automatic advancement and Grieve finishing third in the fourth heat with the seventh-fastest time of the night to move on.

9. Elijah Jefferson – 21.20 (q)
13. Melaki Gutierrez – 21.33

2025 MW Indoor 400m and 4x400m champion Brodie Young ran below 21 seconds in the 200m for the second time in a row and only the fourth time in his career to open up his weekend in Clovis with a second-place finish in his heat and the fifth-fastest time of the day, with Elijah Jefferson making it in off his 21.20 clocking that was good for ninth overall. Melaki Guttierez finished just .13 seconds behind Jefferson to place 13th in his first MW race.

Women’s 400m Hurdles Prelim
1. Hanna Kiess – 59.27 (Q)

Kiess ran the fastest time of the day for the Women’s 400H prelims as she pulled away in the first heat, securing her qualification with a 59.27 clocking.

Men’s 400m Hurdles Prelim
1. Levente Soos – 51.29 (Q)
3. Jacob Cavanaugh – 52.88 (Q)

Soos and Cavanaugh went 1-2 in the opening heat of Men’s 400 hurdles prelims as both punched their ticket to the Final, with Soos finishing with the top time of the day and Cavanaugh slotting in at third. Freshman Semaj Thompson was DQ’d after a lane violation.

Jasmine Wood won her first conference title by just one-hundredth of a second as she nosed Air Force’s Ella Johnson (34:27.50) at the finish line, scoring the first points of the day for UNM ahead of a combined four points from Nicola Jansen (34:41.74) in sixth and Christina Nisoli (34:48.80) in eighth. Behind them, freshmen Anya Belisle (36:15.41) and Millie Freeland (37:49.12) placed 17th and 20th overall in their first MW OTF Championship race.

The Lobos squeezed out 26 points in the men’s 10K final with four Lobos in the event’s top six finishers, with Vincent Chirchir (28:59.75) and Evans Kiplagat (29:04.52) finishing as MW Champion and Runner-Up as both finished under the previous meet record of 29:05.72 set by Air Force’s Luke Combs last spring. Thomas Termote (29:18.37) and Rikus Van Niekerk (29:34.73) brought in eight more points as Termote finished just outside the podium and Van Niekerk closed the scoring with a sixth-place finish. Freshman Jayden Hernandez (31:43.13) finished 17th.
