ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.— The Lobos added their first addition of the offseason with the signing of forward Jessie Joaquim, as announced by head coach Mike Bradbury and staff on Thursday.

Joaquim, the sister of recent Lobo Hulda Joaquim, finished her second season at Cochise College, where she appeared in 57 games with 28 starts and averaged 18.2 minutes per game, 6.1 points per game and 6.6 rebounds per game in her two seasons.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Jessie to our program,” commented Bradbury. “At 6-2, she brings a strong presence in the post with her athleticism, defensive instincts, and ability to control the glass. She runs the floor extremely well, scores efficiently around the basket, and has the touch to extend her range out to 15 feet.

“We’re really excited about the impact she can make on both ends of the floor and the energy she’ll bring to our team.”

The newest Lobo is coming off of her sophomore season with the Apaches, where she scored 331 points and brought down 340 rebounds in 883 minutes of play which included 28 starts and 29 games played. She scored in double figures in 18 games with two games of 20-plus points and 19 games with 10-plus rebounds and three games with 20 rebounds or more. Defensively, she also recorded at least one steal in 24 games last season, with 10 games with multiple steals, averaging 1.3 steals per game. As a result of her production on the court, Joaquim was named the ACCAC Co-Defensive Player of the Year and earned a spot on the second team. Additionally, she was named the ACCAC Player of the Week three times and the NJCAA Player of the Week once.

Joaquim jumped from 34 rebounds and 19 points as a freshman to 340 rebounds and 331 points as a sophomore, as well as saw her assists improve from six as a freshman to 48 as a sophomore, her steals go from five to 37 and her minutes increase from 157 to 883.

From Maputo, Mozambique, Joaquim attended high school at Escola Secundária de Francisco Franco in Madeira, Portugal. She intends to major in psychology at UNM and chose UNM because of, “the relationship I’ve developed with the entire basketball staff and in addition the culture and heritage of UNM”.
