Lobos Drop Contest to Miners
EL PASO, Texas— The Lobos tied the game at one in the second inning on a Sydney Carithers double down the line, but the Miners scored in the second, third and fifth innings in the 10-2 final.
Ashley Archuleta went 2-2 and added a walk for the Lobos, with UNM finishing with six hits in the game. Archuleta led off the game with a single, taking second on a fielding error and a DeNae Vasquez-Dickson sac bunt moving her to third. Keyannah Chavez walked to put runners on the corners with one out, but a strikeout and popup kept UNM off the board.
The Miners plated a run in their first at-bats on a single, stolen base and single through the right side, with UNM answering with a run in the top of the second.
Miracle McKenzie started the inning with a single and advanced to second on a passed ball, with Carithers hitting a double down the left field line after fighting off three foul balls and working a full count to score pinch runner Adelaide Haack.
UTEP took the lead in the home half of the inning on two runs on two hits and added two runs on two hits in the third.
After a scoreless fourth for both teams, the Lobos loaded the bases in the top of the fifth with Archuleta, Vasquez-Dickson and Hayden Luderer hitting singles to the outfield. However, a fielder’s choice with the out being made at home, a fielder’s choice to shortstop that allowed Vasquez-Dickson to score and a grounder to first limited the Lobos to one run.
The Miners scored five runs on five hits in the bottom of the fifth to enforce the run-rule.
Caprice Barela got the start and went 2.0 innings, finishing with three strikeouts and allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits. Lexi Atcitty went 1.0 inning and allowed two runs on two hits with one strikeout, Marina Tinari went 1.1 innings with four runs allowed on four hits and Ella Dawson pitched 0.1 inning.
