LAS VEGAS, Nev. –– The New Mexico men’s golf team continued its strong play against an elite field at the Southern Highlands Collegiate during Monday’s second round at Southern Highlands Golf Club. Playing against 11 of the top 30 teams in the nation, the Lobos shot 5-over during the second round to sit in fourth place at 12-over through 36 holes.
Second-ranked Auburn continues to lead as the only team under par, with a 2-under total through 36 holes. Host UNLV is second at 1-over, followed by No. 24 Pepperdine at 11-over and the Lobos at 12-over. No. 9 Virginia and No. 4 Oklahoma are tied for fifth at 16-over, while No. 12 Illinois (22-over), No. 26 Texas A&M (24-over), USC (25-over) and No. 11 Florida (26-over) round out the top 10.
Alvaro Portillo and Wyatt Provence continue to be in the top 10 of the individual leaderboard, each shooting a 2-over 74 on Monday to be T-8th at 2-over through 36 holes. Carson Herron shot the lowe round of the day for UNM, an even par 72 to be T-11th at 3-over. Mesa Falleur shot a 1-over second round to be at 5-over for the tournament, while Clark Sonnenberg rounds out the lineup at 11-over.
“I am proud of the fight this team has showed over the last couple of days,” said head coach Jake Harrington. “We have put ourselves in great position and need to continue to stay mentally tough tomorrow and finish strong.”
The Southern Highlands Collegiate concludes Tuesday in Las Vegas.
