Lobos Win Season-High Seven Events at NAU

by Frank Mercogliano

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — New Mexico won a season-high seven events out of 16, including two wins by Arianna Stokes and both relays, but Northrn Arizona scored enough to hold for a 171-122 victory in a dual meet with the Lobos.  Congruently, the diving team took part in the platform dive in the Lumberjack Diving Invitational, with Arianna Pelligra earning a Zone qualifying score of 236.10, her best score of the season.

Pelligra, who eschewed the finals to move over to the dual meet diving events, joins Isabella Gomez and Alice English as Lobos with zone qualifiers in the platform, an event UNM general doesn’t practice much on in their home natatorium.

UNM took both relays, with Kaylah Yazzie, Emily Ford, Jordan Foster and Arianna Stokes winning the 200-yard medley with a time of 1:43.80.  In the 400-yard freestyle, it was Linda Franco, Stokes, Foster and Sophia Corder winning at 3:29.65.  The two wins in the relays were part of a huge day for Stokes, who also won a pair of events in the 50-free (22.99) and the 100-free (50.62 raw).

Other event wins were turned in by Alex McGill in the 100-back (56.57 raw), Ellie Broughton in the 1,650 (17:31.05 raw, 16:58.55 converted,  which is easily UNM’s best time of the season in that event) and Amaya Oliphant in the 200-breast (2:23.17 raw, 2:21.57 converted).  That was her season-best and UNM’s second best time in the event this season.

The Lobos return home for their final meet of the season, hosting the New Mexico State Aggies on Senior Day at Seidler Natatorium at noon on Saturday, February 8.
