Grieve Takes Back 600m Record on Day 1 at UNM Team Open
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – New Mexico Track & Field opened a busy weekend of competition as hosts of the UNM Team Open on Friday with another 600m program record – this time from Rebecca Grieve – and new personal bests from Lou-Anne Pouzancre Hoyer and Brodie Young in the 200m that rank among the Top 3 in program history.
ON THE TRACK
Opening things up in the unseeded sections of the men’s 200m, Elijah Jefferson put down the fastest indoor time of his UNM career (21.51 raw / 21.58 converted) in his first 200m race of the season – good for second in his heat and 12th overall. Semaj Thompson (22.94/23.01@) finished fourth in the same heat and 48th overall.
Sofia Pineda (24.66 / 24.73@) put down the 11th-fastest time of the unseeded sections to lead the way on the women’s side, with Eva Ngom (18th, 24.96@) and Adryana Shelby (25th, 25.51@) both notching improvements from their season-opening times last weekend as the next-fastest UNM finishers and Ophelia Pulley (25.71@) and Pietra Campbell Simoes (25.95@) rounding things out in 32nd and 34th in their indoor 200m debuts.
Next up in the 3,000m, Jayden Hernandez (8:19.59 converted) finished 10th to lead the UNM men ahead of Kipruto Koech (15th, 8:32.84) and Will Pardue (16th, 8:38.46) in the first 3K race of the true freshmen’s collegiate careers.
In the women’s races, Tina Nisoli (9:33.0 converted) finished second overall in her own first 15-lap race ahead of four freshmen – Sylvia Schwedler (10th, 10:10.41), Anya Belisle (11th, 10:10.64), Katrina Endres (13th, 10:23.21) and Lyla Fedio (17th, 10:47.97).
Kahari Wilbon was UNM’s fastest finisher in the men’s 400m “B” sections, clocking a 48.43 (48.54 converted) to finish second in the ninth heat and 14th overall. CJ Pizzeck came just shy of dipping below the 50-second mark with a 50.37 (50.48) to finish third in the eighth heat and 31st overall.
Exactly a week after teammate and fellow Scot Hannah Taylor broke her indoor program record in the 600m, Rebecca Grieve took it back in dominant fashion. Fresh off a 300m program record last Saturday (37.81), the junior crossed in 1:26.91, 3.39 seconds ahead of the next finisher and 5.95 seconds faster than her previous best of 1:32.86 to etch her name at the No. 1 spot on the UNM all-time list – that 1:26.91 time ranks No. 7 among NCAA performances all-time.
In the invitational sections of the 200m, Lou-Anne Pouzancre Hoyer and Brodie Young both notched splashy new personal bests that ranked among the Top 3 in program history. Pouzancre moved up to No. 2 on the UNM all-time list with a 23.59 conversion (23.52 raw) and Brodie Young solidified his grip on the No. 3 spot with a 21.23 (21.16) – Young is now just a hundredth of a second away from tying Victor Akhalu (21.22) for the No. 2 spot. Pouzancre’s time would slot in at No. 35 on the most recent NCAA Indoor Qualifying list, with Young just outside the Top 50 in the nation after clocking in at No. 81 this week.
