Lobo Track & Field Unveils 2025 Outdoor Schedule
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – New Mexico Track & Field unveiled its outdoor track schedule for the 2025 season on Thursday, with two meets hosted by the Lobos at the UNM Track & Field Complex and plenty of high-profile competition all over the west in store for the Lobos as they look to build on a successful fall.
The Lobos are entering their second track & field season with Head Coach Darren Gauson at the helm, coming off a fall cross country season culminated in Top-10 team finishes for both men’s and women’s squads at NCAA Championships for the first time in program history, with Habtom Samuel and Kosgei both finishing as NCAA Runners-Up and USTFCCCA Mountain Region Athletes of the Year.
Last season, the Lobos finished fifth on the men’s side and sixth on the women’s side at Mountain West Outdoor Championships, sending 16 athletes to NCAA First Round Preliminary action. As UNM’s lone representative at NCAA Outdoor Championships last year, Samuel won an NCAA individual title in the men’s 10,000m and scored enough points with his two First Team All-American finishes in Eugene to lift the UNM men into a tie for 23rd place in the team score.

A LOOK AT THE SCHEDULE
Two weeks after NCAA Indoor National Championships wrap up, UNM splits up to kick off the outdoor slate, with a portion of the team heading to the Lone Star State for the Texas Relays (March 26-29) and Bobcat Invitational (March 27-29) while others will stay at home in Albuquerque on March 29 as UNM hosts the New Mexico Spring Invitational.
That same weekend, Habtom Samuel will make his return to Sound Running’s THE TEN — an elite meet comprised primarily of professionals and Olympians — where he ran the second-fastest 10K time in NCAA history last season as one of two collegians to finish under the previous record.
A week later, the Lobos return to Texas for the UTEP Speed & Power Meet (April 11-12) in El Paso before splitting across four meets in California the following week — the Mt. SAC Relays (April 16-19), the Bryan Clay Invitational (April 16-18), the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate (April 17) and the Beach Invitational (April 18-19).
Last season, of the eight UNM Men’s and Women’s 5,000m and 10,000m times that ranked in the Top 50 in the nation at the conclusion of the regular season, seven were run at either Stanford or Azusa Pacific. This will be the fourth season in a row that the Lobos compete at both Stanford-hosted meets.
The Don Kirby Twilight, UNM’s second and final home meet of the outdoor season, is set for the following week on April 25.
The Lobos split up once again the following weekend between the Payton Jordan Invitational (May 2; Palo Alto, Calif.) and the Arizona Desert Heat Classic (May 3; Tucson, Ariz.).
Postseason competition begins with the Mountain West Outdoor Championships on May 15-17, hosted by Fresno State this year at Warmerdam Field. UNM finished fifth on the men’s side and sixth on the women’s side at MW Outdoor Championships in 2024, with four individual MW champions in total.
For each individual event contested at each of the Preliminary Round sites, the top 48 declared student-athletes and top 24 declared relay teams will be accepted into the competition, with the top 12 in each advancing to the NCAA Outdoor National Championships June 7-10. UNM had 16 athletes competing at West Prelims in 2024, with 10 returning this season.
For runners that qualify, the 2025 NCAA outdoor track and field championships will be held at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. from June 11-14. It will be the 20th time the outdoor championships have been hosted by Oregon.
