Lobo Earn Best Scores at Phill Hansel Since 2018

by Frank Mercogliano

HOUSTON, Texas — For a third straight day, Isabella Gomez turned in a zone qualifying score, and this time she was joined by teammate Alice English, but it was Arianna Stokes who stole the show, winning the 100-yard freestyle by 0.04 seconds as UNM finished the Phill Hansel Invitational with 569 points to finish seventh overall.

The 569 points were nearly 200 more than UNM’s 2022 appearance at the Hansel, and it was UNM’s most points since scoring 891 in 2018 when UNM finished third overall.

Stokes picked up a win in the 100-free after coming in second in the prelims. Houston’s Liya Goupil raced out to a 49.87 in the prelims as Stokes was second with a 50.21, but in the final it was Stokes finishing just ahead, with a 49.80, a mark which nipped Goupil’s 49.84.

Stokes’ 49.80 puts her second on the top performers list for the 100 free, just behind Hedda Oritsland, who swam a 49.49 in 2018.

It was the fifth time a Lobo hit the top-formers list in the meet in a swimming event, as Stokes also did it in the 50 free.  Joining her was Sophia Corder (100 fly), Katy McCarter (100 back) and Ellie Broughton (400 IM).

In the platform, Gomez nearly won that event, coming in second in both the prelims and then the championship final.  She scored a 263.80 to qualify for zones, meaning she turned in a qualifying score all three days.  In the final she improved to 265.35, but it wasn’t enough to top Houston’s Caroline Roelen for a win.  Arianna Pelligra nearly qualified both rounds, just missing at 220.35 and then again at 210.25.

Alice English, who barely missed the championship final, won the consolation with a qualifying score of 227.05, a score that would have been seventh overall.  UNM is now officially off until January 2 at San Diego State, although a swimmer or three may head to the U.S. Open in Greensboro in two weeks.
