Several Top-10 Performances Highlight Day 2 in Houston
HOUSTON, Texas — Isabella Gomez was at it again, breaking 300 in the 3-meter dive in recording a second straight Zone qualifier, and both Ellie Broughton and Sophia Corder recorded top-10 performances on day two of the Phill Hansel Invitational, hosted by the University of Houston.
The Lobos are in eighth place after two days, trailing seventh-place San Jose State by 17.5 points.
Gomez led another strong showing for UNM in the diving competition, this the 3-meter. Both she and Alice English qualified for the championship final, with Gomez turning in a 289.00 to sit third overall, and English scored a 247.80 to sit seventh and earn her way into the final.
Gomez actually dropped a spot to fourth, but it had nothing to do with her as she became UNM’s first diver of the season to break 300, scoring 303.85. English narrowly missed a zone qualifying score in the final, hitting 272.60 to stay seventh but improve by nearly 30 points.
Rithika Colvin finished 16th overall to earn a spot in the consolation final.
In the swimming events, Sophia Corder swam a 55.67 to place her into the A-Final and also into the top-10 performers list in the 100-yard butterfly, with Jordan Foster qualifying for the C-Final. Corder stayed in seventh in the final, swimming a 55.91.
The other big time was turned in by Broughton in the 400-yard IM. After a 4:27.94 in the prelims, she shaved off three seconds in the B-final to earn her way into the top-10 performers list, UNM’s third breakthrough of the meet.
The Phill Hansel Invitational continues Friday with the final day. Events include the 1650 Freestyle, 200 Backstroke, 100 Freestyle, 200 Breaststroke, 200 Butterfly, 400 Freestyle Relay, and Platform diving. Lobo fans can watch the meet at golobos.com/watchswimming.
