By the Numbers: New Mexico at San Diego State

by Frank Mercogliano

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — As New Mexico gets ready to head to San Diego to take on the Aztecs on Friday night at 7:35 pm Pacific/8:35 p.m. Mountain, here 10 numbers to get you ready for the game.

4 – That’s the number of times this season that the Lobos have played in a game with at least 90 combined points.  This year UNM has played in games with 90 combined points (New Mexico 50, New Mexico State 40), 94 (Wyoming 49, New Mexico 45), 95 (New Mexico 52, Air Force 37), and 100 points (Arizona 61, New Mexico 39).

9 – That’s the number of games in a row that San Diego State has won in the series over New Mexico, a streak that started in 2009.

19 – That’s the number of catches for UNM’s Ryan Davis over the past three games, going for four against Utah State, nine against Colorado State and six against Wyoming.  Last season he had 21 catches for the entirety of 2023.

19.3 – That’s the combined average accepted penalties between New Mexico and San Diego State, the two most penalized teams in the FBS.  The Lobos are last in the nation with 10.0 accepted penalties per game, and San Diego State is next to last at 9.3 accepted penalties per game.

24 – That’s the number of football games UNM has played during a presential election week in program history.  UNM overall is 8-16 on election week games, going 4-5 when the Republican nominee wins the electoral college.  UNM’s last win during election week was in 2016 when UNM beat Utah State 24-21 five days following Donald Trump’s win over Hilary Clinton in that election.

220 – That’s the number of consecutive extra points made against UNM, a sort of silly long streak that dates back to October 19, 2019.

474 – That’s the number of consecutive plays played on defense by corner Bryson Taylor before finally taking a defensive snap off.  His streak started on a 1st-and-goal against Arizona with 3:15 to go in the third quarter on August 31 and it ended with 7:11 to go on a 1st-and-10 at the 20-yard line of Wyoming.  Taylor played every play in the month of September Auburn, 67, Fresno State, 76, New Mexico State, 70) and October (Air Force, 77, Utah State, 85, and Colorado State, 57).

2,988 – That’s the number of yards of total offense for Devon Dampier, who is sixth nationally and is poised to break the UNM single-season record for total offense, which is 3,649 yards by Stoney Case in 1994.

5,487 – The amount of days since UNM’s last blocked punt, the longest skid in the FBS.  UNM last blocked a punt on October 31, 2009.  Hyrum McCarter, the youngest player on the Lobo roster, was just three years old when that happened.

10,440 – That’s the total career punting yardage for Aaron Rodriguez, who was the fourth Lobo to ever break 10,000 yards punting.  He is 297 yards from third on the Lobo list, and 418 from second on the list.  He most likely will not catch Tyler Gaus, who had 11,096 punting yards.
