ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico (3-6, 2-3 MW) takes on the San Diego State Aztecs (3-5, 2-1 MW) in a matchup where everything is in play for UNM.  The game is UNM’s first trip to Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego, on the former site of Qualcomm Stadium.  The Lobos need three wins to qualify for a bowl game, and two conference wins plus a host of other results could net UNM a spot at 4-3 in the Mountain West Championship game in what would amount to a six-way tie with Colorado State, Fresno State, San Diego State, San Jose State and UNLV.

QUICKLY

  • The Lobos are coming off a 49-45 loss to Wyoming in which the Cowboys scored the game-winning touchdown on a controversial catch in the end zone where Jaylen Sargent seemingly did not survive the ground in the process of completing the catch, although there was no stoppage for an official replay review of the score.  UNM had plenty of time to score and retake the lead, but a sack-fumble of Devon Dampier with just under three minutes left snuffed out a promising drive.
  • San Diego State is coming off a 56-24 loss at Boise State in which it trailed 28-0 in the second quarter.  The Aztecs allowed Ashton Jeanty to rush for 149 yards and two touchdowns on 31 carries, but in the first half, SDSU’s defense was stout, limiting him to just 43 yards and just 2.8 yards per carry.
  • UNM needs to win the final three to become bowl eligible, while SDSU has to win three-of-four.  A four-game winning streak for SDSU would put the Aztecs at 6-1 and in line potentially for a Mountain West title game berth.

SERIES vs. SAN DIEGO STATE

  • San Diego State leads the all-time series 29-15, and the Aztecs have won nine straight.  The last Lobo win was 16 years and five coaches ago, when Rocky Long led UNM to a 70-7 drubbing of SDSU.  That was UNM’s last hurrah in the series, as SDSU has won games in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2017, 2018, 2021, and 2022, with three of those seven being one-score games.
