Lobos Post 13th Place Finish at The Williams Cup

WILMINGTON, N.C. –– The New Mexico men’s golf team concluded play at The Williams Cup on Tuesday with the final round at Eagle Point Golf Club. The Lobos shot their best round of the week, 7-over, during the final 18 holes to finish in 13th place among the elite field with a 40-over total.

A trio of top-10 teams, host North Carolina, Arizona State and Auburn, were the only three teams to finish under par. The Tar Heels took the title at 16-under, one shot ahead of the Sun Devils at 15-under. Auburn was third at 12-under.

Carson Herron was the Lobos’ top individual finisher, shooting a 1-over 73 in the final round to finish at 9-over. Alvaro Portillo had New Mexico’s best final round with an even-par 72 on Tuesday. Mesa Falleur shot 73 on Tuesday, while David Davila shot 77 and Clark Sonnenberg rounded out the lineup with an 82.

The Lobos will wrap up the fall season next week with a trip to Oklahoma for The Clerico. The tournament, hosted by Oral Roberts in Tulsa, will run Oct. 28-29.
