Dampier Named Mountain West Offensive Player of the Week

by Frank Mercogliano

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Devon Dampier, who threw for 272 and rushed for 105 and was responsible for four touchdowns in leading UNM to the largest second half road comeback in school history, was named the Mountain West Offensive Player of the Week.

Joining him with league honors was defensive back Jalen Catalon of UNLV as Defensive Player of the Week, and UNLV kicker Caden Chittenden, who was named both Special Teams Player and Freshman of the Week.

Dampier was dazzling again, totaling 373 yards of total offense, throwing for two touchdowns and rushing for two others as UNM’s offense scored 50 points for a school record-tying third straight game. Dampier threw first half touchdown passes of 14 and 21 yards to get the Lobos back in the game after falling behind 17-0.

In the second half, Dampier had 263 yards of total offense (106 rushing, 157 passing) as UNM scored five second half touchdowns.  Dampier got the comeback started for UNM with a 33-yard touchdown run on third-and-11.  That was one of nine third down conversions in the second half.  The only time UNM didn’t convert, Damier hit Ryan Davis for 39 yards on fourth-and-6 with just under five minutes to go down nine.

Dampier’s 200/100 game rushing and passing marked just third time a Lobo has ever done that twice in a career, and just the second time it has been done twice in a season, joining Billy Rucker in 1985.

The Lobos, winners of three straight, face the Colorado State Rams on Saturday at 3:05 pm in a game streamed on the Mountain West Network.  It can be heard on the Lobo Radio Network as well.
