Lobos Conclude Competition in San Marcos and Bay Area

New Mexico Track & Field wrapped up a busy weekend in Texas and California on Saturday with a meet record from Brodie Young in the 400m at the Bobcat Invitational and two new personal bests.

Down in San Marcos, Brodie Young won the Men’s 400m with a meet record finish of 46.15, with Rebecca Grieve putting down her fastest season opener (55.19) on the women’s side to finish 11th. Victor Akhalu’s 10.36 time in the men’s 100m netted him fourth place overall ahead of a new personal best from Jose Cornejo (10.61, 25th) and a UNM career best for Elijah Jefferson (10.68, 32nd).

In the final event of the day in Texas, UNM men’s 4x400m squad (Brodie Young, Levente Soos, Jacob Cavanaugh, Tim Harris) finished third with a season-best 3:13.98 finish. That time would rank UNM among the Top 50 in the West Region.

Over in the Bay Area, Saturday’s racing got started at the Mike Fanelli Classic, with Sophia McDonnell (2:11.76) and Sarah Eckel (2:12.94) finishing fifth and sixth in the fastest heat of the women’s 800m for 11th and 13th overall, with Luke Cunningham running a 1:55.45 in the men’s competition for an eighth-place finish in the second section.

Over at Stanford, Klara Dess ran the fastest women’s 800m of the day to finish sixth in the fourth section with a 2:08.92 time that would put her just inside the Top 50 in the nation on the current NCAA D-I Qualifying list. Gabriella K. Szabo (2:11.29) finished sixth in the sixth section and Harriet Tuson (2:12.37) finished fifth in the eighth section to round things out.

Dylan Burrows led the way on the men’s side with a 1:49.64 time, good for second in the second section ahead of Matthew Larkin (1:54.38, 6th). Samuel Field also ran under 1:50 in the fifth section, finishing second with a 1:49.69 time for a lifetime PR in his collegiate 800m debut. The final competitor of the day, Osaze Demund finished fifth in the following section with a 1:53.35 time. Both Burrows and Field should find themselves ranked in the Top 50 on the NCAA D-I Qualifying List on Monday with those times.
