LIHUE, Hawaii –– The No. 16 New Mexico men’s golf team began play Thursday at the John Burns Intercollegiate with the first round at the Ocean Course at Hokuala. The Lobos shot 6-under during the first round to finish the day in a tie for sixth place.

Long Beach State holds the first round lead at 15-under, while Grand Canyon, Arizona and Washington State are tied for second, all at 10-under. Utah is fifth at 9-under, while the Lobos are tied with San Diego State at 5-under.

“I am proud of the way the team battled today,” said head coach Jake Harrington. “Unfortunately we got to the toughest stretch of holes today (No. 14-18) when the winds were blowing 20-30 mph. That being said, we need to play those holes a lot better over the next couple of days to give ourselves a chance to win.”

Bastien Amat was the low Lobo on Thursday, shooting a 3-under 69 to end the day T-12th on the individual leaderboard. Carson Herron (2-under) and Matthew Watkins (1-under) also shot under par in round one for the Lobos, while Albert Boneta was at even par. Alvaro Portillo shot 4-over to round out the UNM lineup. David Davila shot 2-over while playing as an individual.

The John Burns Intercollegiate will continue Friday and conclude on Saturday on the island of Kauai.
