Lobos Sweep Mile, 800m Races on Day Two at UNM Collegiate Classic

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – New Mexico Track & Field swept the top spots in the men’s and women’s mile and 800m races to highlight and got its 10th-fastest women’s 4 x 400m relay in program history on Day Two of the UNM Collegiate Classic at the Albuquerque Convention Center Saturday.

UNM athletes added three more PR’s to finish the weekend with 11 in total to go with four marks on Friday that ranked among the Top 10 in program history in their respective events.

The Lobos’ final home meet of the season is set for next weekend at the Don Kirby Invitational Feb. 9-10. Next weekend’s events – as well as all of UNM’s collegiate home meets this season – will be exclusively live streamed via FloTrack, with live results available via GoLobos.com/TrackResults.

THE ACTION
Jose Cornejo picked up the first event win of his career with a 6.93 (6.91 raw) in the men’s 60m dash, finishing 7 hundredths of a second ahead of the rest of a field that also included Elijah Jefferson (11th, 7.06).

In the women’s 60m, Lauren Fowler came just short of a new personal best, finishing ninth with a 7.67 time ahead of Ophelia Pulley (38th, 8.10) and Malia Dumlao (50th, 8.67). Dumlao also competed in the 60m hurdles, finishing 49th (10.10).

UNM swept the top two spots in the men’s and women’s mile races, with Samuel Field (4:03.86) and Mercy Kirarei (4:42.07) racing to comfortable event wins ahead of new personal bests from Thomas Termote (4:08.24) and Hanna Bruckmayer (4:42.34).

Bruckmayer’s performance was her first in a UNM uniform after joining the Lobos at the semester, and Kirarei was racing in her first collegiate mile after running the fastest 3,000m in the Mountain West last week – their times would rank fourth and fifth on the current Mountain West performance list. Field already holds the No. 2 spot on the MW list with his 4:02.05 season best, but Termote’s new PR would rank 15th in the conference.

Next up, Hanna Kiess – another Lobo newcomer this semester – finished 16th (58.33) in her first collegiate 400m race.

Luke Cunningham came just shy of a converted PR with a 1:51.97 time to finish as the fastest 800m runner in the non-invitational sections – a time that would make it three Lobo men with times that rank among the Top 10 in the Mountain West. On the women’s side, Analisa Ibarra ran the first 800m race of her collegiate career, winning the non-invitational heats with a 2:16.67 converted time that would rank 17th in conference.

Men’s and women’s 4 x 400m relays concluded the weekend’s competition for UNM athletes, with the men (Victor Akhalu, Tim Harris, Levente Soos, Brodie Young) winning heat three and finishing seventh overall with a 3:12.71 modified composite time. A women’s contingent (Lou-Anne Pouzancre Hoyer, Annamaria Leszczynska, Hanna Kiess, Analisa Ibarra) finished ninth overall with a 3:47.26 modified time that stands as the 10th-fastest in program history.
