Lobo Men's XC Headed to First National Championship Race Since 2014
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – For the first time since 2014, New Mexico Men’s Cross Country is headed to the NCAA Championship race as a team.
The Lobos, ranked No. 19 in the most recent USTFCCCA Coaches’ Poll, learned that they were included as one of 13 at-large teams to qualify for the National Championship in Saturday’s NCAA Selection Show. They’re coming off their best Mountain Regional finish since 2013 (3rd place), led by an individual championship from Habtom Samuel, who is among the favorites to take home an individual trophy in Charlottesville next week.
The last time a UNM men’s squad qualified for Nationals, they finished 14th. The Lobo men’s best finish was 8th in 2009.
Joining the men’s squad will be individual qualifier Nicola Jansen, who punched her individual ticket to the championship with a runner-up finish at Regionals on Friday.
The NCAA Division I Cross Country Championship race is set for Saturday, Nov. 18 at Panorama Farms in Charlottesville, Va. Live results and streaming options will be available via GoLobos.com – Follow @UNMLoboTFXC on Instagram and @UNMLoboXCTF on X for live coverage, race content and more.
