by Frank Mercogliano

NEW YORK, N.Y. — The College Sports Communicators (formerly CoSIDA) in association with The Associated Press (AP) and the Fiesta Bowl Organization, released the midseason “Watch List” of 49 college football student-athletes from 42 different schools currently under consideration for the 2023 Comeback Player of the Year Award. Tavian Combs, who is one of 13 players nationally to be averaging double-digit tackles per game, is one of those 49 on the list.

Combs is one of three Mountain West players to make the list.  He has started and played in four of UNM’s five games, and despite some lingering injuries, he leads the team in tackles with 42.  He also has 3.0 tackles for loss which also leads the team, to go with a pass breakup, a quarterback hurry, a forced fumble and a blocked field goal.

Combs is 12th among all active FBS players in tackles per game, and he ranks tied for 10th in tackles per game this season at 10.5 per contest.  His 10.5 tackles per game is tied for the national lead among defensive backs.

New Mexico opens a two-game homestand on Saturday, hosting San Jose State at 4 p.m. at University Stadium.  Fans can purchase tickets here.
