Plenty New at University Stadium for 2023

by Frank Mercogliano

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — With New Mexico’s 2023 home opener taking place on Saturday, September 9 at 6:02 pm against Tennessee Tech coming up, there are plenty of new features and refreshed features for fans to pay attention to for the upcoming season.

Tickets for the season opener are on sale now, and fans should utilize UNM’s 50% sale where if you buy any regular priced ticket for one of the other five games (including New Mexico State on September 16), you can get a ticket for Tennessee Tech for 50% the regular price of a seat.

As for what to expect at Lobo Football games in 2023, fans should familiarize themselves with the Lobo Football Game Day page at GoLobos.com.  The new and improved Game Day page has links for information on parking, tailgating, the Albertsons Market Howl Zone, ticketing and University Stadium Policies.

Here are some of the highlights for fans coming to the games in 2023.

LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION – The 2023 season will see UNM’s first full usage of its new dynamic lighting system.  Gone are the old halogen lights that once turned on couldn’t be turned off and then turned back on until they had cooled down, a 30-minute process.

Now with UNM’s dynamic lighting system, along with a much brighter stadium for the players and fans, lights can be programs to music and to pulse and beat and flash for things line entrances and scores.  The exact same lights have been used at UNM’s soccer stadium much to the delight of players and fans there.

ALBERTSONS HOWL ZONE – Located outside Gate 5 (Northeast corner) and right next to the Stadium East Parking Lot, the Albertsons Howl Zone is a family-friendly, free area that opens 3 ½ hours before the game where fans can purchase food and beverages from Bubba’s 33 and get free samples from Albertsons.  Chock full of inflatables for the kids and other games for adults, the Howl Zone is a great place to meet with other fans and families prior to the game and to also catch the Lobo Walk, which happens around 2 ½ hours before the game.

LOBO FOOTBALL IS ALL RIGHT – Once again, entrances into all parking lots (and exits out of them as well) are right turn only, so please plan accordingly.

METAL DETECTORS – This year there will be metal detectors near the entrances to the facility.  Please plan on arriving a little earlier than usual to get into the stadium with time to spare.  The less you are carrying into the stadium, the quicker your entrance will be, but our goal is to keep all of our patrons safe.

CLEAR BAGS ARE THE ONLY BAGS – For a third straight year, UNM will have a clear-bag only policy, which is pretty much the norm around the country, and is similar to our friends across the street, the Albuquerque Isotopes.  Fans that attempt to bring in a backpack or bag will be asked to return them to their cars before they enter the stadium.

PARKING, NO CASH, JUST CARD – Parking lots are much the same as 2022, but fans can familiarize themselves with the various lots on the parking section of the Game Day page.  Fans that do not purchase parking in advance (also, fans can purchase parking in advance right here) can pay at the lot entrance for parking, but it is card only, as cash will not be accepted.  Lots are open six hours prior to kickoff, with the exception of the New Mexico State game when lots will open eight hours prior.

TICKETS IN ADVANCE ARE THE BEST TICKETS – Last year nearly 90% of tickets purchased for Lobo Football were bought online.  Fans can purchase tickets by going to www.golobos.com/tickets, which is the same place to get single-game parking passes.

Much like flying these days, tickets and parking passes are digital and can be easily downloaded into an Apple Wallet or phone for quick scanning and entry.

STAY A WHILE – For the 2023 season, UNM will once again have a no-reentry policy for games.  This is done in the name of fan safety and to allow for better egress for our incoming fans.
