Early Aztec Runs the Difference in Saturday Loss

by Allison Weiss

SAN DIEGO, Calif.—Early offense proved to be the difference as San Diego State scored four runs in the first inning and added two runs in the second inning in the 6-0 final on Saturday.

The Lobos had an opportunity to get on the board in the first as Rachael Hathoot worked a walk and Peyton Robinson followed with a bunt single, with both runners moving into scoring position on a sac bunt by Keyannah Chavez. However, the Lobos were unable to capitalize before the inning came to an end.

SDSU needed two at-bats to get on the board after a leadoff bunt, stolen base and hit back up the middle that hit Lobo starter Emmalyn Brinka and ricocheted to the outfield to score a run. A hit-by-pitch led to Amber Linton entering in relief, and following a double steal, a single down the line scored both runs. A single led to the fourth run before Chloe Yeatts threw out a runner trying to steal for the first out (one of two runners thrown out by the freshman catcher in the game), a grounder to Jenna Trim at first for the second out and a swinging strikeout got the Lobos out of the inning.

The Aztecs made it 6-0 in the second for the final runs of the game.

UNM had its second hit of the game on an Ashley Archuleta single through the right side in the fourth, Emma Bramson reached on a single to right in the fifth and Janae Cameron hit a pinch-hit single to right field in the seventh to account for the remaining Lobo hits.

The series with the Aztecs concludes on Sunday at 12 p.m. PT on the Mountain West Network.
