Ditzenberger, Egloff named MW Players of the Week

by Evan O'Kelly

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – After leading the New Mexico baseball team to a perfect 4-0 record last week, Dylan Ditzenberger and Riley Egloff were named the Mountain West Player of the Week and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, announced by the conference office on Monday.

The duo helped the Lobos beat Minnesota 4-3 in 12 innings last Monday, before a three-game sweep of Northern Colorado at home over the weekend at Santa Ana Star Field.

It is the second consecutive week that Egloff earned the award, after claiming it for his first start of the season against No. 23 Oregon State on Feb. 17. It is the first-career Mountain West weekly honor for Ditzenberger – a senior newcomer to the team this spring.

Egloff set the tone for the Lobos on Friday afternoon, throwing five shutout innings of one-hit baseball on the way to his second victory of the season. Egloff walked just one hitter while striking out eight, and cut his already-stellar season ERA in half to the tune of 0.90. The senior right-hander has struck out 15 and walked two, holding a WHIP of 0.80 and allowing just one run in his two outings this spring.

One of the top leadoff hitters in the country, Ditzenberger is hitting .519 this spring (14-for-27), while reaching base at a clip of .576 out of the top spot in UNM’s lineup. As of Monday, Ditzenberger ranked No. 3 in the NCAA with 16 runs scored through his first seven games of the year, and he has also supplied nine RBIs, two doubles, and two stolen bases. After reaching base in his final 14 games at Kansas in 2022, Ditzenberger has extended the streak to 21 consecutive games by reaching base in all seven of UNM’s games so far this season.

In addition to his offensive prowess, Ditzenberger has been perfect defensively at third base with no errors in his 14 chances this season.

The Lobos have now won three weekly awards so far this season, including Egloff’s honor last week. Ditzenberger became the first Lobo to earn MW Player of the Week since Lenny Junior Ashby claimed the award on March 14, 2022.

New Mexico (6-1) hosts St. Bonaventure this weekend in another four-game series at Santa Ana Star Field. The series kicks off Friday at 2 p.m., followed by a noon doubleheader on Saturday and a noon first pitch on Sunday.
