Haulcy Named MW Freshman of the Week for Second Time

by Frank Mercogliano

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — For the second time this season, New Mexico true freshman A.J. Haulcy was named the Mountain West Freshman of the Week, and that award now puts him in prime running position to become UNM’s first Mountain West Freshman of the Year since DonTrell Moore in 2002.

Along with Haulcy, weekly honors went to Titus Swen of Wyoming (Offense), Michael Shawcroft of San Diego State (Defense) and Jonas Dalmas of Boise State (Special Teams).

Haulcy, one of four true freshmen that started in the secondary for UNM against Fresno State, had 24 tackles, including a half-tackle for loss and an interception that he returned 38 yards, setting up a field goal.  Fourtenn of Haulcy’s 24 tackles limited Fresno State to two yards or fewer.  Haulcy is the only freshman in the league to be named Mountain West Freshman of the Week twice, as he earned the honor after UNM’s 27-10 win over UTEP.  In that game he picked off a pass and forced a fumble at the one-yard line.  That was the game that he was pressed into action after Tavian Combs tore is ACL.

The 24 tackles tied Dakota’s Cox’s 24 tackles against South Dakota for the most by a Lobo in the last 23 seasons, and it marked just the 16th time any FBS player had 24 in the last 23 seasons.

The Lobos are off this weekend and play three of the remaining four games on the road.  UNM’s final home game is Friday night against San Diego State, November 18 at a time to be announced by FOX Sports.  That game will be on FS1.
