ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The rain and thunder storms forced the final day of Fall Camp to move indoors into the UNM Indoor Practice Facility, but that didn’t dampen the crowd, or the squad as the Lobos concluded Fall Camp with an approximately 120-play scrimmage. With that completed, the team now breaks Fall Camp and gets a couple of days off before reconviening on Tuesday morning for the start of preparations for the season opener on September 3 against Maine.
The Lobo offense, despite missing a few key pieces as several players are held out for the scrimamge, moved the ball effectively at times, both on the ground and through the air. However, the defense once again were the stalwarts, especially the defensive backfield, which saw several big time coverage plays including an interception by Kalen Woods and a pair of PBUs by A.J. Odums and Zach Morris that showed the several hundred in attendance scattered around the outer edges of the field that UNM has plenty of depth there.
Perhaps the biggest key coming out of the scrimmage was the work of placekicker George Steinkamp, who hit both of his field goals including what would have been a UNM record 57-yarder that not only split the uprights but had at least eight to ten more yards to spare as he showcased a powerful leg. His other field goal was a 42-yarder.
UNM on offense sat out several key players including Christian Washington, DJ Wingfield and Geordon Porter, who are all expected to by key elements to the Lobo offense. Additionally, guys like Luke Wysong and Nate Jones got limited reps as offensive coordinator Derek Warehime used the scrimmage to get meaningful reps for some players that will be making first-time impacts for the Lobos.
Overall, head coach Danny Gonzales was pleased, especially with quarterback Miles Kendrick, who took most of the First Team reps with CJ Montes and Justin Holaday getting most of the reps with the twos. UNM’s revamped offensive line opened up good holes for a variety of UNM’s backs, but the defense was again outstanding, limiting chunk plays and showcasing solid tackling.
Now, the Lobos will begin school on Monday and return to the field Tuesday for morning practices to get ready for Maine as UNM opens the season with three straight at home.
NOTE: With camp ending, Lobo Football practices will be closed except for former players, invited guests and the media.
