TEMPE, Ariz. — The University of New Mexico men’s tennis team, which made it to the championship match of the Mountain West Tournament despite a five-freshman lineup, picked up several academic honors from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, including earning All-Academic status for the team.
The squad earned that honor by having a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or better for the 2021-22 year. The Lobo men’s tennis team also had seven individuals honored as ITA Scholar-Athletes.
To earn that recognition, a student-athlete needed a 3.5 GPA for the year. In all, seven Lobos earned the honors. Arda Azkara, Alex Maggs, Nicolas Prieto, Jan Pucalka, Georgio Samaha, Daniil Kakhniuk, and Aram Noroozian all were named ITA Scholar-Athletes. Of those seven, on Prieto (a senior) and Maggs (a junior) weren’t freshmen.
Azkara was the Mountain West Co-Freshman of the Year and an All-Region selection, while Pucalka and Maggs earned the honor in doubles. Azkara, Pucalka, Samaha and Noroozian all earned Mountain West Freshman of the Week honors during the season as well.
