by Alma Solis

EUGENE, Ore. — Rivaldo Leacock of the University of New Mexico track & field team earned Second Team All-American as he placed ninth in the 400m hurdles final on Friday night at the NCAA Championships at Hayward Field.

Leacock was the one and only New Mexico student-athlete to run in today’s schedule. He ran in the 400m hurdles final, amongst some of the fastest runners in the event this season. He finished in ninth with a time of 50.84s, earning himself Second Team All-American in his first career outdoor championships. The last time a Lobo earned Second Team-American was in 2014 when Charles Lewis placed 11th in the event, not making it to the final round. Leacock is the first Lobo to make it to the final round of this event in 44 years (1978).

Saturday’s schedule will begin as Elise Thorner and Adva Cohen compete in the 3000m SC final at 2:54 p.m. The trio of Gracelyn Larkin, Emma Heckel and Amelia Mazza-Downie close the championships out in the 5000m final at 4:25 p.m.

The top eight finishers in each event will earn USTFCCCA First Team All-American while the 9-16 finishers will earn Second Team, which will be announced by the organization next week.
