Seven Lobos Punch Tickets to NCAAs on Final Day of Regionals

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The University of New Mexico track & field team ended the final day of the NCAA West Regionals with seven more tickets punched for the NCAA Championships. A total of 11 Lobos (four men and seven women) will be advancing to the championships which will be held in Eugene, Ore., on June 8-11.

The first two Lobos to punch their tickets in today’s competition were Stefanie Parsons and Abbe Goldstein in the 1500m run. Parsons battled through a close finish in the first heat of the event, finishing fifth with a time of 4:20.

Goldstein finished fifth in the second heat of the 1500m run, with a time of 4:19.65 to advance to the championships in a couple weeks.

In the 3000m steeplechase, two Lobos carried on the legacy of New Mexico dominance in the event. In the first heat of the event today, Elise Thorner and Adva Cohen finished in second and third, respectively. Thorner finished with a time of 9:51.96, while Cohen followed at 9:58.81.

After punching her ticket to the championships in the 10K just a couple nights ago, Amelia Mazza-Downie now secured her spot in the 5000m run, as well. In the first of two heats in the event today, Mazza-Downie finished with a time of 16:08.84 to take fourth place.

In the second heat of the 5000m, two more Lobos punched their tickets to nationals. Gracelyn Larkin ran a time of 15:57.50 to place third, while Emma Heckel ran a qualifying time of 16:15.28. This is Heckel’s second event she qualified in as she also punched her ticket in the 10K on Thursday night.

Of the 21 Lobos who qualified for regionals, 11 of them have punched their tickets to the NCAA Championships set for June 8-11 in Eugene, Ore. On the men’s side, four Lobos punched their tickets – Jovahn Williamson (400m dash, 4x400m relay), Rivaldo Leacock (400m hurdles, 4x400m relay), Jevon O’Bryant (4x400m relay) and Victor Akhalu (4x400m relay). On the women’s side, another seven Lobos punched their ticket – Amelia Mazza-Downie (10K, 5K), Emma Heckel (10K, 5K), Stefanie Parsons (1500m), Abbe Goldstein (1500m), Adva Cohen (3000m steeplechase), Elise Thorner (3000m steeplechase), and Gracelyn Larkin (5K).
