Two Lobos Punch Tickets to Nationals on Second Day of NCAA Regionals

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The University of New Mexico ended the second day of the NCAA West Regional at John McDonnell Field on Thursday with two Lobos punching their tickets to the NCAA Championships. Emma Heckel and Amelia Mazza-Downie finished in the top-12 of the 10K run to solidify their place at nationals in a couple weeks.

The women’s 1500m run opened up competition for the Lobos in today’s action. In heat two of the event, Stefanie Parsons ran a season-best time of 4:18.32 to take fifth place and advance to the quarterfinal round on Saturday.

In heat three of the 1500m run, Abbe Goldstein finished in third with a time of 4:18.38. Both Parsons and Goldstein will move on to the 1500m quarterfinal round, set for Saturday at 5:15 p.m. (CT).

In the women’s 400m dash, Tianna Holmes placed third in the first heat with a time of 53.25s. She will advance to the quarterfinal round of the event on Saturday at 6:50 p.m.

New Mexico officially found its first two tickets punched to the NCAA Championships in the women’s 10K. Fighting through a tight close top six, Emma Heckel took second place at 33:37.70, less than two seconds behind first place and just .09 seconds ahead of third place. Amelia Mazza-Downie came in ninth with a time of 33:51.26. The top-12 in the event move on to the NCAA Championships and both Heckel and Mazza-Downie checked those boxes to earn the well-deserved advancement to chase a title in Eugene, Oregon in a couple of weeks.

Awet Yohannes is set to open competition on Friday, May 27, as he competes as the 13th seed in the men’s 3000m steeplechase at 5:40 p.m. (CT). Then, Aidan Quinn will compete as the 26th seed in triple jump at 6 p.m. Jovahn Williamson and Jevon O’Bryant will run in the 400m dash quarterfinals at 6:50 p.m. Matthew Larkin will compete in the 800m run quarterfinals at 7:05 p.m. At 7:25 p.m., Rivaldo Leacock will compete in the 400m hurdles quarterfinals. Abdirizak Ibrahim will run in the 5K at 8:10 p.m. as the 35th seed. The men’s 4x400m relay of Leacock, O’Bryant, Williamson and Victor Akhalu will compete as the 15th seed in the event at 8:45 p.m.
