Ashby Named Mountain West Player of The Week

by Alma Solis

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Sophomore outfielder Lenny Junior Ashby of the University of New Mexico baseball team was named the Mountain West Player of the Week, announced the conference office on Monday afternoon. This is the Lobos’ first weekly award winner of the season.

The accomplishment comes after Ashby had an outstanding performance at the plate last week against then-No. 16 Arizona and Fresno State. He ended the week with a .444 batting average, starting all four games for the Lobos. He had a total of eight hits, including three home runs and a double.

Of his three home runs, he hit a big one against then-No. 16 Arizona to help give the Lobos a 4-3 lead over the Wildcats in the sixth inning. His other two home runs were hit against Fresno State over the weekend, one coming in the seventh inning od New Mexico’s 7-3 win over Fresno State on March 11 and then the other one gave the Lobos a 7-5 lead in the eighth inning of the Lobos’ 9-8 walk-off win over Fresno State on March 13.

The Lobos are headed to Lubbock, Texas, to face Texas Tech on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. (MT) and Wednesday at noon. New Mexico then spends the weekend in Wichita, Kan., for a three-game series against Wichita State on March 18-20.
