BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Four Lobos from the women’s track and field team are set to compete in the NCAA Indoor Championships at the Birmingham CrossPlex this Friday.
All four Lobos have qualified in the same event as Adva Cohen (5th), Emma Heckel (13th), Gracelyn Larkin (14th) and Amelia Mazza-Downie (16th) all qualified in the 5000m run. This is the first time in NCAA history that four student-athletes from the same program qualified for the 5000m. This also marks the first time in school history that four have qualified in the same event, not counting relay teams.
Due to a shortened indoor season in 2021, the Lobos did not attend last year’s championships in Fayetteville, Ark. New Mexico was set to host the 2020 NCAA Indoor Championships with five qualified, but the event was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Lobos will look to take the big stage for the first time since 2019.
The NCAA Championships begin on Friday at 10 a.m. CT (9 a.m. MT) and Saturday at 10:30 a.m. CT (9:30 a.m. MT). The Lobos will only be competing in the women’s 5000m run, which is set for 8:05 p.m. CT (7:05 p.m. MT) on Friday.
After this, the Lobos are set to open the outdoor track & field schedule on March 25-26 at the Arizona State Invitational in Tempe, Ariz.
