Lobos Drop Match at No. 37 San Diego 4-0

SAN DIEGO, CALIF. — The No. 37 San Diego Toreros added No. 71 New Mexico to their stable of ranked opponents toppled as USD handled UNM 4-0 to advance to the finals of the San Diego Shakedown, against either No. 44 Washington and No. 47 Penn.

UNM will face the loser of that match at 3 p.m. Mountain Time on Friday.  USD has faced a ranked for in five straight matches, and the win over New Mexico made them 4-1 in that span.  UNM dropped to 5-6, with five of the six losses coming against teams currently in the national rankings.

The Lobos dropped the doubles point as USD’s nationally-ranked duo of August Holmgren and Gui Osorio took down Arda Azkara and Nicolas Prieto 6-2.  That was coupled with a win at No. 3 doubles by David Norfeldt and Marvin Scheber 6-1 over Rafael Abdulsalam and Georgio Samaha.  Alex Maggs and Jan Pucalka were even at 4-4 when the doubles point ended.

In singles, USD took three matches to clinch the 4-0 win.  Norfeldt took a 6-1, 6-0 win over Aram Noroozian at No. 3 singles for a 2-0 lead.  USD’s two nationally-ranked singles players then clinched the match.  No. 106 Marvin Schaber defeated Alex Maggs 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4 single and then Arda Arkara’s five-match winning streak came to an end, falling 6-2, 6-2 to Holmgren, who is ranked No. 6.
