Lobos Fall to Bulldogs on Day Two of Sanderson Ford Collegiate Classic

SURPRISE, Ariz. – The University of New Mexico baseball team was struck early by Gonzaga, falling to the Bulldogs, 12-2, in the evening game at Surprise Stadium.

Lenny Junior Ashby led the Lobos as he went 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored. In the middle relief spot, Jack Murano allowed no runs and just one walk in two innings pitched.

The Bulldogs jumped on the Lobos early, scoring four runs in the first inning to take a 4-0 lead. In the next few innings, starting pitcher Miguel Reyes Jr kept Gonzaga to just two hits and no runs. The Lobos put a number on the board in the bottom of the third as Jeffrey David reached first on a fielder’s choice and Cole Posey ran home on the same play, making the score, 4-1, in favor of Gonzaga.

In the top of the fourth, the Bulldogs capitalized on a few New Mexico errors, bringing home six more runs for a 10-1 lead. A couple of zeros were put on the board in the fifth inning, before the Lobos brought home another run in the bottom of the sixth. As Kyle Smith reached on a dropped fly ball by the Bulldogs’ Mason Marenco, Ashby scored on the play to make the score 10-2.

Through the sixth and seventh innings, Murano allowed no hits or runs, including a three up-three down sixth inning. In the eighth inning, Jacob Strmiska held Gonzaga to no runs on one hit in his Lobo debut. The Bulldogs put up another two on the board and the Lobos were not able to answer, falling 12-2 to Gonzaga in game three of the weekend.

The Lobos close out the Sanderson Ford Classic on Sunday against the Oregon State Beavers. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. (MT) at Surprise Stadium.
