Quinn Guides Lobos in Indoor Track and Field Season Opener

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of New Mexico track and field team opened its indoor season as four Lobos set new personal bests and four student-athletes competed in their first indoor event as a Lobo at the Air Force Holiday Open on Friday.

Aidan Quinn placed first with a mark of 15.73 meters in the triple jump, setting a new personal best. His previous best was 15.37 meters, which he reached at the Championships at The Peak on Feb. 25-27, 2021. Along with setting a new personal best, the mark also earned Quinn the fourth best triple jump mark in Scottish history.

Camillo Dunninger set two new personal bests in the 60-meter dash and pole vault events. He hit 4.75 meters in the pole vault, slightly beating his previous indoor best of 4.7m, which he reached in the pentathlon at the Mountain West Indoor Championships on Feb. 21-23, 2019. He also set a new personal record in the 60-meter dash with 7.21 seconds, also beating his previous best set in the same meet two seasons ago.

In the men’s long jump, Darryl Thomas hit a mark of 6.74 meters. In the high jump, Adam Giron hit a 1.95-meter mark in his first collegiate event.

Three Lobos participated in women’s pole vault, including New Mexico Junior College transfer Victoria Villanueva and returners Kiara Quezada-Arzate and Alix Rule. In her first event as a Lobo, Villanueva hit a 3.65-meter mark for third place. Quezada-Arzate found a mark of 3.5 meters in her second indoor event at New Mexico. She set a personal best of 3.7 meters last season in the Texas Tech Matador Qualifier on Feb. 19, 2021. This is Rule’s first indoor event as a Lobo, setting a personal best of 3.35 meters in pole vault.

Lauren Fowler participated in her first two collegiate events, setting personal records in the 60-meter dash (7.79 seconds) and long jump (5.78 meters). In the high jump event, Victoria Plummer set a personal best with 1.65 meters and a fourth-place finish. Marthe Roee set a new personal best of 11.67 meters. Her previous record was 11.54 meters, which she reached at the Texas Tech Matador Qualifier on Feb. 19, 2021.

Another group of 11 Lobos will open the indoor season tomorrow at the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener, hosted by Boston University in Boston, Mass., tomorrow. Elise Thorner will compete in the 3000-meter event at 12:55 p.m. (MT). In the women’s 5000-meter event at 2:40 p.m., Adva Cohen, Samree Dishon, Andrea Modin Engesaeth, Emma Heckel, Juanita Johnson, Annamaria Kostarellis, Gracelyn Larkin, Amelia Mazza-Downie and Stefanie Parsons will be competing. Abdirizak Ibrahim rounds out the Lobos competing this week as he will be running the 5000-meter event on the men’s side at 4 p.m.
