Freshman McDonald Leads Lobos Through Two at Branch/McGuire

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Freshman Myah McDonald of The University of New Mexico women’s golf team led the Lobos Sunday for the first time in her career with a career-best score of one-under through the first two rounds of the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational.

UNM finished just eight-over par on the day to tie for eighth. The Lobos tied for first in par-5 scoring (4.75, -10) while also registering 28 birdies.

McDonald is tied for 10th overall after shooting an even 72 in round one and a one-under, 71, in round two (143). She finished the day tied for eighth overall in pars with 25 while posting six birdies. McDonald also tied for ninth overall in par-5 scoring (4.63, -3).

Sophomore Lauren Lehigh followed McDonald, finishing second for UNM with a score of +2, tied for 23rd overall. Lehigh shot a consistent 73 in both rounds for a two-round total of 146.

Just one stroke behind was a trio of Lobos including sophomore Napat “Jenny” Lertsadwattana, redshirt-senior Reva Morris and senior Serena Chon, all three finishing with final scores of 147 (+3). Morris and Chon competed as individuals on the day, registering scores of 71 and 76, and 75 and 72, respectively.

Lertsadwattana finished third in the Lobo lineup, tying for 27th overall. She shot an even 72 in round one followed by a 75 in round two for her three over.

Sophomore Chloé Lauer sits fourth in the Lobo lineup, tied for 31st overall, with a score of 148 (+4) after posting scores of 73 and 75 in the first and second rounds.

Junior Kamie Hamada, competing as an individual, was next on the leaderboard with a two-round score of 150 (+6). She shot a 79 in round one before chopping off eight strokes for a one-under, 71, in round two. Hamada was followed by senior Caroline Jansson who rounded out the UNM lineup in 43rd place with a two-round score of 151 (+7).

As a team, the Lobos finished tied for eighth overall with a score of 584 (+8). Denver leads the tournament through two rounds with a score of 577 (+1), followed by Pepperdine (577, +1.) and Washington (578, +2).

Round three of the 2021 Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational is set to tee off at 7:30 a.m. on Monday.
